Canada Entrepreneur Base Category

The Entrepreneur-Base Category Program enables foreign nationals interested in being self-employed in Canada, a pathway to obtain Canadian work experience, and possible Permanent Residency. While businesses greatly vary in their investment and startup costs, the Entrepreneur program outlines the following categories:

1)   Startup -Starting a Business.
I)Have a personal net worth of $600,000 CAD
II) Prove existing Management experience
III) Be eligible for a Legal Canadian Immigration Status

2)   Buy an existing Business: * A qualified existing business is one that ‘contributes to the economic growth of the province’.

I)Have a personal net worth of $600,000 CAD
II) Prove existing Management experience
III) Be eligible for a Legal Canadian Immigration Status
IV) Make a minimum investment of $200,000 CAD
V) Create at least one full time employment for a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

3)   Regional Pilot
*Participating Rural Communities participate in the Entrepreneur Base Program, although they support specific businesses based on the needs of their community. The basic requirements are the same, although the investment amount is lower.
4) Strategic Projects-
*Foreign Corporations that desire to extend a branch location inside of Canada, can include an office. Significant requirements include, all transferred management must prove essential to the Canadian Branch, be in and have been existing in a senior management role, or have specialized transferrable skill and knowledge unique to the business, an Investment of at least $500,000 CAD.

Canada Entrepreneur – How it Works:

A candidate first submits a registration to the Base Category Program. Within the registration, a pre-application is filled, which includes a business concept. If you are selected from the pool of registrants, your points may qualify you to be selected for a specific Entrepreneur Provincial Program. If nominated by a Province, you can add 600 valuable points to add to your Express Entry. Each program under the Base Categories are unique, and have timelines and steps to follow.

Excluded Business Types include:

any business where the terms of investment include a redemption option pursuant to IRPR 87(6)(d)

any business that may be a passive investment pursuant to IRPR 87(6)(c)

bed and breakfasts,

hobby farms and

home-based businesses

payday loan, cheque cashing, money changing and cash machine businesses.

pawnbrokers

tanning salons

DVD rental stores

coin-operated laundries

automated car wash operations

scrap metal recycling

businesses selling used goods (excluding businesses that provide value-added services such as repairs, refurbishing or recycling)

real estate development/brokerage, insurance brokerage or business brokerage

businesses involved in producing, distributing or selling pornography or sexually explicit products or services, or providing sexually oriented services any other type of business that by association would tend to bring the BC PNP or the Government of British Columbia into disrepute
